My husband can down a pint of Haagen Dazs Swiss Vanilla twice a week—even more during the summer. But, a recent doctor’s visit revealed that he had elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels. This prompted me to experiment with a healthier version of his favorite treat.

I sliced 4 bananas (the spotted ones are best), wrapped them in parchment paper and stored them in the freezer overnight. The next day, I tossed the frozen bananas into a food processor and repeatedly pulsed until they became a creamy consistency. It was a big hit!

You can consider adding a spoonful of peanut butter, Nutella or honey; a handful of chocolate chips or almonds; or a 1/2 teaspoon of powdered ginger, cardamom or cinnamon.

If you aren’t sold on making these more healthful alternatives to ice cream, consider this:

Many of the frozen treats you enjoy are made from 20-plus ingredients, many of which are chemicals. They are not food; they are food products with minimal nutritional value. While, Haagen Dazs is made from more wholesome ingredients, it is loaded with fat and sugar.

So, whenever possible, choose a “nice cream” with a peel, and start freezing those bananas!
